What to Expect During Your First Massage Session at Blissful Mind Bodywork

Updated: Sep 13

Welcome to Blissful Mind Bodywork, where we specialize in chronic headache relief, chronic pain management, car accident injuries, and evidence-based massage techniques. Whether you're an athlete dealing with nagging pain, someone recovering from a car accident, or anyone in need of relief from chronic or acute pain, we're here to help. Our approach is laid-back, bold, and passionate, rooted in intellectual and evidence-based practices.

1. Pre-Session Consultation

Before we begin any hands-on work, we’ll start with a thorough consultation. This is your chance to tell us about your medical history, specific pain points, and what you hope to achieve from your session. During this time the massage table will be adjusted to your liking. The table warmer can be turned on to low medium or high settings and there are a variety of bolstering options available to you. Once the consultation is complete, I will step out the room and instruct you to undress to your comfort level(there is no right or wrong amount to undress!) and get under the sheets face-down face-up or on your side. You may place your belongings in the chair you will sit in during your consultation, the small basket next to your chair, under the chair, on top of the credenza, and hanging anything you would like on the hooks behind you. There are lightning and USB-C cords available for you to use next to the consultation chair.

2. Customized Treatment Plans

No two bodies are the same, and neither are any two massage sessions. Each session is tailored based on your individual needs and goals. Whether you're dealing with chronic headaches or recovering from a car accident, we’ll create a plan just for you. That includes self-massage instruction and exercises specific to your injuries and lifestyle. Just about everything about your session is customizable from the music to the pressure and the temperature. Please feel free to voice your personal preferences so that we can cater the session to your exact needs and desires. If you would like to use your own playlist for your session send us a link on Spotify and we will be happy to accommodate so long as the music is not disruptive to others that share the office space.

3. Evidence-Based Techniques

Our methods aren’t just based on experience—they’re backed by science. We use evidence-based techniques to ensure you get the most effective treatment possible. This commitment to research and results sets us apart. You will not be offered outdated narratives about posture, lactic acid, toxins, or fascia here.

4. Setting Realistic Goals

It’s important to understand what can be achieved in one session versus what might require ongoing treatment. We’ll set realistic goals together to manage your expectations and track your progress over time. Massage is a supplemental wellness treatment, sometimes it can result in miraculous healing, but most of the time it is used to help manage pain over the long term and support healthy habits outside of the massage room.

5. Client Participation

Your comfort is paramount. Throughout your session, we'll encourage you to communicate openly about your comfort levels and pressure preferences. If something doesn’t feel right, don’t hesitate to speak up. At times you may be asked if the drape is secure, if the temperature on the table or hot towel is alright, if you would like more or less pressure/stretching, and to explain in detail your experience of pain. Massage is not a service that is done to you! Let's work together to get the best possible outcome we can.

6. Initial Paperwork

Before your first session, you’ll need to complete some initial paperwork, including health questionnaires and consent forms. This helps us get a comprehensive understanding of your needs and any potential contraindications. When you sign the paperwork you also agree to abide by our policies.

7. Session Duration

A typical session lasts between 60 to 120 minutes. We’ll use this time efficiently to address your specific issues while also allowing you to relax and unwind. When you purchase a 60 minute session you will receive 60 minutes of hands of massage therapy time, and a short debrief conversation discussing your goals, session frequency, and more.

8. Attire and Comfort

You should wear comfortable clothing to your appointment. Depending on the type of massage, you may want to completely undress. Draping techniques are used to ensure your privacy and comfort throughout the session. If you're looking for a Sports Massage style please wear athletic clothing that would be suitable for a workout.

9. Hygiene and Cleanliness

Your health and safety are our top priorities. We maintain the highest standards of hygiene and cleanliness in our treatment space to provide a safe environment for your session. All contact surfaces are cleaned and sanitized between massage appointments. All Linens are clean, sanitary, and never reused before laundered. Massage cream is held in a small container that is sanitized in between sessions. It's expected that you have proper hygienic habits in place prior to your appointments. Please disclose if you are feeling sick or have some type of hygienic issues such as toenail fungus.

10. Therapeutic Environment

Expect a serene and relaxing ambiance in our massage room. We use soothing music(here is the playlist that is used most often), appropriate lighting, and controlled temperature to create a calming atmosphere that enhances your healing experience. In your intake form you can specify what temperature you would like the table warmer, whether or not you would like a blanket, the type of sheets used, the bolsters you would like, and we also offer weighted eye pillows.

11. Pain vs. Discomfort

Therapeutic discomfort can sometimes occur during treatment, but it should never be painful. Understanding the difference is key, and you should communicate any discomfort immediately so adjustments can be made. Massage sessions with a focus on pain relief typically fluctuate between a 3-6/10 level of discomfort. Everyone's experience with pain is different and this is simply a guide for intensity during sessions.

12. Post-Session Feelings

After your session, you might feel a bit sore, similar to how you feel after a good workout. Soreness(DOMS) is not necessary or important for a massage to be effective. Staying hydrated and following any aftercare instructions provided will help you maximize the benefits of your massage. Massage does not cause dehydration and you do not need to hydrate more than usual to compensate for a massage session.

13. Follow-Up Care

To get the most out of your massage, follow-up care is essential. We’ll provide guidelines for stretches, exercise, hydration, and rest to keep you feeling great between sessions. Typically this will be in the format of a personalized google doc.

14. Frequency of Visits

The frequency of your visits will depend on your specific needs and conditions. We’ll discuss a recommended schedule that aligns with your goals for pain relief and management. Typically somewhere between 1-8 weeks is a good range for most people at the start. There is not a clear cut and dry frequency of massage for pain/injury and it is never a "requirement" to overcome pain and tightness symptoms.

15. Professional Boundaries

We uphold the highest ethical standards and maintain strict professional boundaries. Your comfort and trust are paramount in every session. All areas that are professional to work on will be discussed in detail in the written and verbal intake form.

16. Cancellation Policy

Life happens, and sometimes you need to reschedule. Please be aware of our cancellation policy and communicate any changes as soon as possible to avoid fees.

17. Punctuality

Arriving on time ensures you get the full benefit of your session without feeling rushed. Please plan to arrive a few minutes(5-10) early to settle in and complete any remaining paperwork. If it's clear that I am with another client find a seat in the nearby lounging areas of the workspace and let me know you have arrived via text.

18. Payment and Insurance

We accept various payment methods and HSA/FSA benefits. Discuss your options with us beforehand to ensure smooth billing and to take advantage of any packages or discounts available.

19. Client Feedback

Your feedback is invaluable. It helps us improve and tailor future sessions to better meet your needs. Don’t hesitate to share your thoughts after your session. If you'd like to let others know about your experience you can leave a google review here.

20. Combining Therapies

Massage can be even more effective when combined with other treatments like physical therapy, chiropractic care, or personal training. We’ll discuss how to integrate these therapies for comprehensive pain management.

We look forward to welcoming you to Blissful Mind Bodywork and helping you find relief from pain and achieve a better quality of life. Book your first session today and take the first step towards a healthier, pain-free you. If you have any additional questions don't hesitate to reach out, call or text (469)415-4420.
